How are your awnings?

Are you taking good care of your window awnings? Well you better be if you want them to last! So how exactly do you take good care of your awnings? Such things have become an integral part of our homes that we hardly ever think about it.

Now if you really want to make sure that you provide the proper care for your window awnings then the one important thing that you need to consider are the elements. We’ve encountered a lot of cases about awnings in Sydney giving out well before it’s time simply because property owners didn’t know well enough to protect them from the elements. Read on for some great tips on how you can do just that!

Taking good care of your window awnings

When it comes to keeping your window awnings in good condition there is but one simple rule that you can follow – if you are comfortable with exposing yourself to wind conditions outside then it is okay to wind out your awning. If not then you ought to keep it winded in to avoid damages from gusts wind. Such window fixtures are designed by manufacturers to withstand weather conditions but it is always to take extra precautions.

Some awnings come with ground poles for additional support and make the entire assemble a lot stronger so make sure to these are fitted in place every time you wind out your awnings. Having said that, some people think that it is okay to wind out your awnings at all times as long as they have the poles in place which is certainly not the case. Such an awning still requires proper care and that includes occasionally folding everything back in whenever weather conditions are bad.

Awnings are designed to be wound out completely although you do have the option to wind it out partially if so desired. Again it would be best not to wind them out at all in strong winds which can present a significant strain on the entire assembly. A typical awning can effectively withstand water and rotting but not snow – snow deposits on the canopy can present undue strain on window awnings making them prone to breakage which can certainly be hazardous.

Yet another great way of taking good care of a window awning is to simply keep it clean. You can use soap and water on awnings made of PVC. You shouldn’t use soapy water on acrylic awnings as it makes acrylic materials prone to moulding. In the case of the latter, some light brushing is recommended and then wash off the dirt with plain water. The more often you take the time to clean your awnings the easier it would be to keep it that way.

Now when in doubt about whether or not it is safe to wind out your awnings or not then it’s often best to simply not do it all. Exposing such window fixtures to elements that it’s not designed to withstand will take a toll on its durability. After all, these are essentially blinds intended to block direct sunlight –using awnings for the purpose that it was intended is the single best thing that you can do to keep it in good shape for many years to come.

You had great options for my windows, some were straight forward however others were trickier (openings not centred, taps in the way etc). This is my second home I have put shutters in, wouldn't settle for anything else OR any other company!
